Faith and Spirituality in Further Education

Welcome

We know that there are many people working in Further Education who want to make connection between their faith, their beliefs and values, and their work. Perhaps you are one of them. If you are then the short exercises and reflections which we have designed in these pages are for you. They aim to help you live out faith to make a difference. They are tools to help you begin to think more deeply about and act on the faith you hold.

Our places of work are where we spend a lot of our time. Our working life is God-given, it is the place of our discipleship, where we are called to "proclaim good news to the poor, to liberate captives and set free the downtrodden". We offer these exercises and reflections to help you affirm, examine and deepen your call to be about the business and purposes of God in the world of Further Education today.

We offer you the opportunity to work with four exercises which aim to help you:

  • identify what is happening in Further Education and reflect on how it affects you personally and professionally.
  • handle Scripture with more confidence and learn how to relate it to your ministry in Further Education.
  • consider some current thinking about the mission of the church and relate it to your ministry in Further Education.
  • develop your skills of thinking theologically.

You can start with any one of the four exercises and you can do them in any order. We hope that collectively they will help you discern and respond to the will of God and to act with faithful integrity.

Please note that the exercises do not provide answers! They are simply tools and guides to help you think some things through. You might like to share your thoughts with colleagues in your college or with colleagues throughout the country through the fbfe website and the Newsletter FIFE. There is also opportunity to talk with friends and colleagues at the annual fbfe conference held in July.
